(1830 - 1902)
Among the Sierra Nevada, California
oil on canvas
99.99 X 99.99 cm

Bierstadt was born in Germany, he came to America when he was only two. He was known for his lavish sweeping landscapes of the American west. He joined the westward journey and painted many mountains and landscapes along the way. In Colorado Mount Bierstadt is named in his honor. They are 500 completed paintings (possibly many as 4000) during his lifetime. His original paintings come up for sale occasionally but for a hefty price.
"Power of combination--an ideal union of the most splendid and characteristic features our western mountains ... a perfect type of the American idea of what our scenery ought to be, if it is not so in reality."- Albert Bierstadt
This painting is one of largest western landscape that he painted, he painted it in Rome during the winter of 1867-1868. He toured Europe, and his painting was the only glimpse that Europeans saw of the west. Some critics loved his painting and some said it was not n accurate portrait.
This painting relates to my theme because its a beautiful landscape of the American west that was discovered later on in America. I chose this painting because I believe that its an amazing painting of what the Sierra Nevada looks like.
