Andrew Wyeth: Dodges Ridge

Andrew Wyeth (1917 - 2009)
Dodges Ridge
egg tempera on fiberboard
99.99 X 99.99 cm
1947

Wyeth was born in 1917 in Pennsylvania, he was a visual artist known as a realist artist. His father was an artist as well and supported his children in every talent and whatever they wanted. Andrew was born on Thoreau's 100th birthday and his father thought it was a sign that his son was going to an amazing artist. In 1940 he married Betsy James and they had two children together. One of his well known painting is Christina's World. He died in 2009 in his sleep in his Pennsylvania home.

"My pencil is like a fencer's foil."  -Andrew Wyeth

The painting is a portrait of Westport, Maine and he shows the relatedness of land and people. Its a hillside in gloomy weather and tractor tracks on the hill. The wooden stake that looks like a cross with cloth dangling from it, its was probably from the farmers scarecrow.

This painting is an realistic view of land and coast and it is a unique painting of landscape. The wooden stake made me choose this painting because it brings a lot of mystery, with the gloomy background it reminds me of a pirate ship.
