Durand was born in 1796 in New Jersey, in 1823 he was known for the one of the country's finest engravers. Later in he started to oil paint and he found a passion for landscape. Durand is remembered for his detailed work of trees, rocks, and foliage. His 1849 painting Kindred Spirits sold at a auction in 1904 for 35 million, it was the highest record price at the time for an American Painting. In 1886 he died in New Jersey.

In the landscape cows wonder around a group of berry-pickers who had to climb a cluster of boulders. It reveals distant fields, with many trees, and forested areas. It represents the optimistic future for the citizenry at mid-century.

This relates to my theme because its a perfect view of our country, and it reminds me of the San Bernardino Mountains that I live on. This is one of my favorite paintings that I have chosen.
