The Subsiding of the Waters of the Deluge
oil on canvas
90.80 X 99.99 cm
1829
Cole was born in 1801 in England, and in 1818 him and his family migrated to the United States settling in Ohio. When started to paint he had little success in portraits thats when he decided to paint landscapes. He has over 2,500 sketches that can know be seen at The Detroit Institute of Arts. In 1836 he married Maria Bartow and they had five children together.
“Nature has spread for us a rich and delightful banquet. Shall we turn from it? ... We are still in Eden.”- Thomas Cole
The painting is a shadowy mouth of a cavern, the light illuminates the water, sky, and the rocky overhang. The painting depicts the Great Flood as described in the Old Testament of the Bible. His landscape painting depicted the United States as the "new Eden" washed clean of the despotism of Europe.
This landscape painting relates to my theme because its a beautiful scenery of the United States, and I chose this because I love deeply I can look into it.
